Solar panels in Hidden Hills

The city's utility page is blunt: Edison serves Hidden Hills. Next door in Woodland Hills, and in nearby West Hills, City of Los Angeles homes are on LADWP and its own net metering rules instead. Calabasas buys power through Clean Power Alliance, but Hidden Hills isn't on CPA's member list, so Edison usually supplies the electricity as well as the wires; our Calabasas page covers that two-provider bill.

Since April 15, 2023, Edison customers applying to connect solar have joined the CPUC's net billing tariff, which credits exports at Avoided Cost Calculator values the commission says usually run below grid prices.

Neighboring cities are fed by several circuits, the city explains, while all of Hidden Hills runs on one, Horizon. Edison can shut it off in a Public Safety Power Shutoff, most often in high winds or on Red Flag days; the city sends a citywide alert but says it has no control over Edison's call. Unplanned outages matter too: in August 2026 the City Council wrote to Edison about repeated interruptions tied to the Valdez substation, which serves Hidden Hills and Calabasas.

Ask whether your street is due for undergrounding before the electrical design is final. The city aims to bury every overhead line (about 420 poles remained in February 2025), and its guide warns that undergrounding often means replacing the home's electrical panel; if so, make it one electrical panel upgrade sized for solar and storage.

A.E. Hanson began selling Hidden Hills as full-acre lots in 1950, and the zoning map still puts most of the city in a one-acre-minimum zone. In the Census Bureau's 2020–2024 survey, the median home dates from 1970 and nearly two in three have five or more bedrooms. So we check an older main panel before sizing and flag any design past the 10 kW expedited limit.

The association also sets the roof: faux wood shake, slate, faux slate or two-piece clay tile, all Class A, with other materials weighed case by case and no composition shingle. Real wood shake survives only through small repairs; past 50 square feet in 12 months, the whole roof must be brought up to standard. Replace an aging shake roof before panels go on; our panel removal and reinstall service clears existing panels for a reroof.

The association's 2026 draft discourages ground mounts unless shade or similar hardship rules out the roof. A barn roof, which must be Class A too, can use the expedited checklist, since it covers accessory structures. Every lot keeps an equestrian set-aside, room for a 600-square-foot barn and a 600-square-foot turnout with a clear 10-foot access path, and every committee plan set must show it, so a ground mount has to leave it open. Ask whether the committee counts one toward its 4 percent cap on accessory structures.

By our count of the county's copy of the State Fire Marshal's 2025 map for local areas, about 70 percent of the city is rated Very High, including the west side along Jed Smith Road; most of the rest is High or Moderate, and City Hall sits in a small non-wildland pocket. The Kenneth Fire forced a temporary evacuation in January 2025, and the city says it came through unharmed.
