Level 1 vs Level 2: which charger do you need?

Level 1 is the cord that came with your car. It plugs into a normal 120-volt outlet and adds roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour — about 40 miles overnight. If you drive a plug-in hybrid or under 30 miles a day, that can be enough, and it needs no installation at all.

Level 2 runs on a dedicated 240-volt circuit — the same kind that feeds an electric dryer — and adds roughly 12–40 miles of range per hour depending on amperage. A typical EV goes from low battery to full overnight. This is the install most LA homeowners want, and it is the one that requires an electrician and a permit.

What a Level 2 installation involves

  1. Site check and load calculation. We look at your panel, where the charger will hang, and how much capacity your home has to spare. Electrical code requires the circuit to be sized about 25% above the charger's continuous draw, so a 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp breaker.
  2. Dedicated 240-volt circuit. A new breaker — typically 40 to 60 amps — and wire run from your panel to the charger location.
  3. Mount and connect the charger. Hardwired, or a NEMA 14-50 outlet if you want the flexibility to swap chargers later.
  4. Permit and inspection. A 240-volt circuit requires an electrical permit everywhere in LA County. We pull it and meet the inspector, so the work is on record when you sell the home.
  5. Panel upgrade, only if needed. Many Valley homes built before 1990 still run on 100-amp panels, and a 40–60 amp charging circuit doesn't always fit. When it doesn't, we'll show you the options: a lower-amperage charger, a load-management device, or a main panel upgrade — with the math for each.
